History
FOPCHEN was founded twenty years ago as Africa Read Books in the United States, focusing on supporting African youth's education. Over time, our mission broadened to include promoting and preserving Nigerian heritage. Today, we have expanded our reach beyond Nigeria, working as a foundation to safeguard and celebrate heritage across Africa and the African diaspora.
Academy
Siyanda Academy offers transformative educational experiences for young Africans, immersing them in decolonized African history, culture, and sustainable practices. Our six-week programs empower youth to be advocates for their heritage and future leaders.
The Institute
The Institute for Sustainable Architecture is dedicated to promoting sustainable construction through traditional African techniques. We train architects and builders in methods such as rammed earth and compressed earth bricks, ensuring that our past informs a greener future.

ABOUT US
The Foundation for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage in Nigeria (FOPCHEN) is a non-governmental organization committed to safeguarding Nigeria’s rich and diverse cultural heritage. From ancient architectural landmarks to intangible cultural traditions, we work to preserve, restore, and celebrate the legacies that define Nigeria’s history and identity. Our projects span from restoration of historical buildings to the documentation of cultural practices, and our educational programs aim to train a new generation of heritage custodians.
